Synthetic Men of Mars Edgar Rice Burroughs Books
The Burroughs Barsoom series is best taken from the chronological order in which they were written (available on Wikipedia). This volume is pretty far down the line and mentions lots of characters from earlier volumes, and at the same time can stand on its own as well. The character of John Carter is predominant and continues to hold my enthusiastic interest. It's light reading and lots of fun to see if one may guess how John Carter manages to get out of the clutches of the current monsters. These were written in the first half of the 20th century, and are very imaginative, and the characters are nicely developed along with the author's concept of Mars as a dying planet. If one likes adventure and far away places, these novels are just the ticket!Product details

Synthetic Men of Mars Edgar Rice Burroughs Books Reviews
Love all the John Carter series
Great Book.
Not up to Burrough's usual work on the Mars Series. It's in first person and John Carter is not the main character. Fast paced and action packed worth the read.
I love Burroughs' work and have read all of the Barsoom series as well as most of the Venus and Tarzan series. I consider him the master of pulp fiction. These are "guys" books. The love stories are simple, and the action is constant. This volume in the Barsoom saga is one of my favorite. The science fiction concepts introduced are interesting and I suspect unique for their time. The characters are fun and the action is always on.
I love ERB series of John Carter on Mars. Takes me there, and I just love his writing style. This book was sought after for it's artist rendering on the cover, to complete my set, that I had as a teenager. Love it!
comments refer to the kindle formatting, or absence thereof, not burroughs' work.
the text of this kindle edition is formatted with hard line breaks, for some reason. if your kindle is set up for large-print/increased font size reading, you will not see and read in clean paragraphs, as nature and the author intended. you will feel like you're wrestling with bad poetry. and if you really want to read the book, you will probably wind up doing what i just did buy the alternative (classics on demand) version available here.
it works just fine.
I used to read Edgar Rice Burroughs books way back in elementary school and I loved them, of course. I think ERB is the greatest reading experience ever for youthful nerds. But I lost track of good old ERB long ago and I guess I felt that I'd outgrown him. But I saw "John Carter" purely for nostalgic reasons and I absolutely loved it. A new favorite for me, in fact. So I got some of those ERB books just for the heck of it and "Synthetic Men of Mars" was the first one I read. I was startled and amazed at how entertaining old ERB was, even at my advanced and decrepit age. This book packs almost everything you can think of into 161 pages. The action moves at a breakneck pace and has gorgeous women, noble heroes, a mad scientist, an island fortress, horrible monsters, mind-transference, double-crossing scoundrels, swordfights, explosions, plots of world conquest; you name it, it's here. But I wasn't expecting a sly sense of humor that had gone right over my head all those years ago. Along with all the action ERB throws in some social satire, philosophy on zoos from the animals' viewpoint, theories on the baffling female mind and even a prescient proposal for the freeways that still lay in the distant future when he wrote about it. But there's still more; that's only a sample. You have to read it to see it all. Believe me, go into this book (and other ERB classics) with an open mind and you'll be very pleased. He can easily compete with, and even surpass, a whole lot of contemporary fiction.
