This historical novel by Pushkin is extremely informative as well as being very entertaining. There are black and white illustrations to amplify the story of the Pugachev Revolution in 1700's Russia.There is romance to move the story forward and the characters are well drawn.
I enjoyed this novel very much.

Being the first read book I read of Pushkin's, I was left thoroughly impressed. It is quite short (<200 pages), but has a very enticing plot and vivid imagery. Several illustrations included in the book also help bring it to life. What makes it great is an ideal balance of romance, tragedy, and drama. If you are interested in Russian history, it is also a must have.
very interesting Russian love story
Couldn't put it down, a great story, very enjoyable.
I have read so much of Pushkin's writing that I was delighted to find this little treasure of short stories. They are all engrossing, particularly the title story. Loved it so much I sent my daughter a copy and she loved reading it as well. Highly recommended to anyone and a NOT TO BE MISSED work for any Pushkin fan. As usual, one wishes one could read it in Russian and avoid the translation idiosyncracies, but that is life.
Read the other reviews for more about the story. I found it an enjoyable read and the translation seems fine. If you like it, try Ruslan and Ludmilla; The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin; The Stone Guest; and Eugene Onegin.
Pushkin is noted as one of if not Russia's greatest writers. It's my first Pushkin book and I couldn't put it down. Pushkin writes this in a way that although set in the 18th century the language (and the story) could, in many ways, be in the modern era. His writing flows wells and while not over wordy he gives you just the right of amount of words description and feeling. The book is short and I think that is its great strength. This tells me that Pushkin didn't waste words and only gave you beautifully selected but concise passages. The seller advertised this in very good condition and for my mind the book was practically brand new; and I really liked that. It took about a week to get to me (standard ship) and it took me only two days to read over a weekend -- it was that good!
Looks like they Scanned
Ioughed the kindle version. Looks like they scanned the pages from the book. This kindle version is unacceptable. I don't even want to read it now since I have to try to enlarge every page in order to be able to see it so I can read. If I knew before how the kindle pages look, I wouldn't have bought it. I am very disappointed.
